Dundee stab threat ‘roadmen’ robbed strangers in city centre.

A sheriff told louts Luke MacVeigh and Kaleb Clacy: “I am not going to have it on the streets of Dundee.”

A pair of “Dundee roadmen” robbed innocent people on a night out in the city centre and threatened them with stabbing.

A sheriff chastised Luke MacVeigh and Kaleb Clacy for targeting strangers in the early hours of the morning while wearing black attire.

The pair has been remanded in custody pending sentencing for robbing two men and a woman of a mobile phone, earphones, a pocketbook, and other items on October 30.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that MacVeigh, 18, was the aggressor when he robbed a man of AirPods and a cell phone at approximately 2am on Meadowside, heading towards Reform Street.

MacVeigh and Clacy were accompanied by three other youngsters at the time. The man handed over his Apple earphones after “laughing nervously”.

MacVeigh, who was accompanying Clacy, 20, then shouted, “Empty your pockets or I’ll stab you right here in the street.”

He inserted his hands into the man’s jacket pocket and took an iPhone 13. According to Prosecutor Ewan Chalmers, the man called police after returning home.

Second robbery

MacVeigh and Clacy terrorised two more victims just a few minutes later. Mr Chalmers stated, “They were approached by all five, and MacVeigh enquired if they had anything on them.”

“The complainers responded no, but MacVeigh screamed, ‘Get your phones or money out or I’m going to kill you,’ and he claimed to have a knife.

“The (female) complainer handed over her purse due to fear and threats of violence.” MacVeigh then snatched the man’s hat and removed his glasses, dropping them to the ground.

Before travelling down Reform Street, MacVeigh stated something like, “If you grass, I’ll stab you.”

When police arrived about 2.45 a.m., MacVeigh fled towards Boots before being apprehended while still carrying the stolen items.

‘Roadmen’

Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith asked what MacVeigh and Clacy were wearing, and Mr Chalmers replied, “Dark clothing.” The sheriff stated:

“Dark clothing…” “Dundee Roadmen.” “Roadman” has numerous connotations in urban slang, but it is most commonly used to characterise streetwise young individuals dressed in tracksuits or hoodies.

MacVeigh and Clacy, both of Dundee, were previously remanded in connection with the charges, but pleaded guilty during a pre-trial hearing. The court heard that MacVeigh is also awaiting sentencing for stealing a car and assaulting his partner and mother.

Sheriff Niven-Smith stated, “The courts have seen a preponderance in the south of England of so-called roadmen causing pandemonium; I will not have it on the streets of Dundee.

“The victims should be entitled to enjoy nights out without these individuals accosting them.” The pair’s sentence was deferred until next month to allow for the preparation of a social work report.
