Dundee’s ‘designer Christmas trees’ revealed for 2025

Dundee’s ‘designer Christmas trees’ revealed for 2025.

The trees and decorations are produced entirely from repurposed or recycled materials. This year’s “designer” Christmas trees were unveiled in Dundee’s city centre.

The trees, built entirely of repurposed or recycled materials, were produced by local artists to commemorate Dundee’s Unesco City of Design title.

The most recent designs are shown with some of the older ones outside the City Churches on Nethergate.

New designer Christmas trees in Dundee

The new trees are as follows:

  • The Christmice Tree by Hollis Crowe – Made from old wooden bed slats, reused chicken wire and household electrical waste, designer Hollis Crowe has taken inspiration from the old box of mystery cables that seems to sit in every home.
  • ARE WE THERE YET!!! by John Fairley –  Also known as ZX81art, John Fairley has reimagined old road signs to create this tree, evoking memories of family road trips during the festive season.
  • My Christmas Tree Was A… by Louise Forbes and Islay Spalding – Collectively known as Man Pin, wood-worker Lousie and jeweller Islay have teamed up to construct a tree made up of broken and discarded musical instruments.
  • Tinsel Trash by Zoe Gibson – Made from tin cans, reclaimed plastic signage and tarpaulins by Dundee-based visual artist Zoe Gibson, this tree is bursting with colour and movement.

Since the project’s debut in cooperation with Dundee City Council in 2022, 17 designs have been commissioned.

In previous years, some have criticised the designs, particularly the lack of a “real tree” in City Square.

The Christmas tree was originally relocated from City Square to outside the Steeple Church in the Nethergate in 2021.

However, a 40-foot Nordmann fir was put in its regular location at the beginning of November. Dundee’s Winter Westfest returns for its second year.

The Courier has created a comprehensive guide outlining all you need to know about the Perth Road event.
