Edinburgh council tax set to rise by 5 per cent according to draft budget.
According to a draft budget for the coming year, Edinburgh’s council tax is expected to rise by 5% beginning in April. The hike would result in a band B property, the most popular in the city, costing £1,094.
46 per year, up from £1,042.34, excluding water and sewage. And the cost of a band H property, which is now the highest band of council tax, will rise to £4,022.13, up from £3,830.60.
The figure may change, as councillors are scheduled to vote on revisions to the draft budget provided by municipal officers at a special budget meeting next week.
While less than the severe 8% jump Edinburgh ratepayers endured last year, the increase will still exceed inflation.
Scottish Water also stated in January that water and sewer prices would increase beginning in April, with household bills rising by 8.67 percent.
The finance convener of the city’s Labour administration recently stated that the city’s fees and charges will be frozen as much as feasible in the upcoming city budget.
Councillor Mandy Watt stated earlier this month, “We realise that fees and charges are significant concerns for our constituents over living costs. This is why we plan to freeze as many of these as possible throughout the upcoming fiscal year.
“Two new council tax bands will be introduced in April 2028: Band I for homes valued between £1 million and £2 million, and Band J for properties worth more than £2 million.
Last year’s rate hikes came amid a wave of hefty increases across Scotland, believed to be the largest in 20 years.
It came after Holyrood confirmed the end of a statewide council tax freeze that will last from April 2024 to April 2025.
