There were chants of “paedos” and “send them home” directed at the counter protestors.

The Courier also reported that anti-immigrant protestors threw two eggs, at least one of which was returned. Stand up to racism. Tayside and the Dundee Trades Union Council coordinated the counter-protest.

They blared music from speakers at Stobsmuir Park while chanting “fascist scum” and “off our streets Nazi scum”.

“Who is Stobbie?” The counter-protesters also chanted, “Our Stobbie.” A significant police presence kept the two groups apart during a tense standoff that lasted more than two and a half hours.

Traffic was also temporarily halted on Pitkerro Road and the surrounding roundabout to allow the throng to cross the Kingsway. It has not been confirmed whether any arrests occurred.

‘We’re doing it for the women and kids’

Opposing protesters were virtually face to face near Stobsmuir Ponds, with only a single queue of police between the two groups.

The protest began shortly before 2 p.m. When the parties arrived to Alloway Terrace, police formed two lines that were several metres apart.

They were shepherded individually across Kingsway. Mr Tarbett helped plan the anti-immigrant protest.

He told The Courier that “we don’t want illegal migrants here, and we’re doing it for the women and children.” “It was a nonviolent protest, and it will be the first of many to follow.

“It will be every week after this. “We’re going to be boycotting hotels, houses of multiple occupancies and B&Bs.” “I cannot be racist. Look at the hue of my skin.

“Half of the people here are not racist, either. “It’s the fact they’re [asylum seekers] here illegally and we don’t know anything about their background.”

Anti-immigrant protestor criticises protest

Many other anti-immigrant protesters avoided the larger throng near the police line.

Shona Skene, who was watching from a distance, questioned the protest’s nature. The 58-year-old told The Courier, “I have nothing against refugees at all.

“People should help them, but we should help ourselves first. “This is why people are so furious and twisted right now, since Dundonians are getting nothing at all.

“Dundee is a disaster, and this isn’t going to help since things are getting a little boisterous here.

“We have to do it properly. This is exactly like a group of vigilantes.

“It’s supposed to be a quiet protest, but it’s not well-organised, and I don’t like it at all. “When they came round the corner I saw them pushing the police.”

‘Protest is picking on the wrong target’

Counter protestors used a loudspeaker to get their messages across.

Harvey Duke was acting as senior steward for the counter protest group.

He has lived in Dundee for his whole life.

Mr Duke told The Courier he was “absolutely shocked” when he learned about the protest.

He stated, “For far too long, migrants have been scapegoated and blamed for all social ills in society.” “They’re just ordinary individuals fleeing wars. “We oppose all attempts to demonise asylum seekers and are not going to stand for fascists stirring up trouble in our society.”

A Stobswell resident, who asked not to be named, described the anti-immigrant protest as “really nasty.”

She stated, “They are taking the Scottish flag in the name of trying to get rid of poor people seeking refuge in Dundee.”

“We want to show that there are more people in Dundee who welcome migrants than those who want them to go. “The refugees did not trigger the housing or cost-of-living crises.

“The protest is focussing on the incorrect objective.

“It should be picking on the government for not tackling these bigger issues.”

Dundee MSP: ‘Lot of misinformation out there’

Prior to the demonstration earlier this week, the Dundee City Council had appealed for “peace”. Maggie Chapman, a Green Dundee-based MSP, was present on Saturday afternoon.

She told The Courier that participating in the counter-protest was a “really important” part of her job.

She stated, “It is critical that we stand in solidarity against those who do not believe refugees have a right to be here, as well as those who are shouting some pretty nasty and racist obscenities.”

“We have an unquestionable moral and legal commitment to provide shelter and assistance to asylum seekers and refugees. “They are our neighbours, future coworkers, and friends.

“We need to see accurate information about what is occurring because there is a lot of disinformation out there. “We’ve seen a couple of objects thrown and we need to ensure those acts of aggression are dealt with appropriately.”
