Elon Musk slammed for spreading misinformation after Dundee ‘blade’ incident.
“Some members of the far right are attempting to use this tragedy to forward a racist, anti-immigrant agenda.
“This is dangerous and divisive.” Elon Musk has been chastised by a Scottish councillor for spreading falsehoods about an incident in Dundee.
On Saturday, August 23, a 12-year-old girl was charged after reportedly being caught with a “bladed weapon” in Lochee.
It generated a number of social media posts saying that the girl and her pals had previously been followed, recorded, and “chatted up” by two people, with several mentioning the accused pair’s alleged ethnicity.
Then, on Tuesday, Elon Musk, who has almost 225 million followers on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a claim that the girl was recorded by “a migrant”. The post also included bits of local news coverage of the incident that made no mention of race or immigration status.
Nadia El-Nakla, councillor for Dundee’s West End and wife of former First Minister Humza Yousaf, criticised the irresponsible distribution of falsehoods.
She told the Courier: “This is quite disturbing for a variety of reasons. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable on our streets. Carrying a knife is a felony, and we must maintain a zero-tolerance approach against knife crime.
“It is also evident that far-right elements are attempting to use this tragedy to forward a racist, anti-immigrant agenda. “This is both harmful and divisive, and it jeopardises the unity of our communities. Here in Dundee, we will not let this happen.
Our police service has presented the details of the occurrence. “These should be trusted — not the disinformation being pushed by those who wish to vilify asylum seekers and immigrants.”
Meanwhile, right-wing activist Tommy Robinson shared the news with his 1.4 million followers on X. The 42-year-old repeated the claim that children were “filmed by a migrant” and that it was “very concerning”.Stand up to racism.
Tayside stated that “misinformation serves a particular narrative and distracts from the real issues in our society: austerity and increasing poverty, widespread mental health crises, and isolation, all of which are the result of our governments’ failures and mismanagement.”
“The spread of this misinformation endangers by inviting hatred and violence towards members of our communities who are already so marginalised.”
