Man says he did not push councillor over in Seaford.
A man has denied shoving a councillor over after an argument over flags. No further action will be taken against the 29-year-old after a Seaford councillor accused him and another guy of assaulting her.
The local lawmaker, a woman in her forties, is claimed to have approached the guys while flags were being raised on the A259 in Seaford.
A quarrel erupted, and she stated to police that she was “pushed to the floor” in Sutton Park Road, Seaford. Lewes District Council has confirmed that the woman is a district councillor.
A video has been extensively shared on social media, allegedly depicting the interaction.
Sussex Police have stated that they will take no further action against the 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assault.
The man said that he did not shove the councilman and simply touched the bag of flags during the confrontation. “I never once touched the lady,” he added.
“I only touched the bag.”
He stated that the claim has had a tremendous impact on him, preventing him from participating in activities such as taking his child trick or treating on Halloween.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman stated: “Following a thorough investigation, including a review of video footage of the incident, the investigation has concluded with insufficient evidence to support a prosecution.”
“A 29-year-old man who was arrested has been released with no further action to be taken at this time.” The Argus approached the councillor, but she declined to speak.
This comes as a national trend of displaying St George’s Cross and Union Jack flags in public places, as well as painting roundabouts with red crosses.
The movement has been contentious, with supporters claiming it promotes patriotism and critics calling it frightening.
