Exclusive: Millwall told to take Mihailo Ivanovic action – Sky Sports man thinks it is “important”.
Pundit Lee Hendrie believes Millwall should sign striker Mihailo Ivanovic to a new deal after a summer of speculation about his future.
Ivanovic became Millwall’s most expensive signing when he joined from Vojvodina last summer for £2.8 million, but the club has exceeded its transfer record twice since then with the acquisitions of Camiel Neghli and Josh Coburn.
The 20-year-old had a fantastic debut season at The Den, scoring 12 goals in 37 league appearances to help the Lions finish eighth in the Championship, and he also scored in the FA Cup.
Ivanovic’s impressive play did not go unnoticed, and he was reputedly the target of a £7 million approach from Italian club Parma in the final stages of the summer transfer window, but Millwall rejected the offer, believing he was worth around £15 million.
Leicester City, Everton, and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also said to be interested in Ivanovic this summer, but the Lions were able to keep their top player, and as FLW exclusively revealed on Monday, they are now in talks with the striker about a new contract.
Ivanovic has yet to open his account this season, and he missed his side’s 1-0 victory over Watford on Monday night due to a shoulder injury, but he could be set to commit his future to Millwall, with the club hoping to negotiate a deal this week.
Lee Hendrie reacts as Millwall close in on Mihailo Ivanovic contract breakthrough
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie said that Millwall must find an agreement with Ivanovic on a new deal following reports connecting him with a transfer abroad this summer, and he backed the striker to regain form after a difficult start to the season.
“He proved last season at Millwall when he got 13 goals that he was worth every penny of keeping him attached to the football club,” says Hendrie.
“There were calls for him to leave for obvious reasons, including his goals, front play, and link-up play.
“He’s well suited to Millwall, which is why you believe he’s been so important for them.
“You get the impression that Millwall will want to secure him after the rumours, and you know he’ll return and start scoring goals because that’s the type of player he is. “I think it’s important they get him nailed down.”
Mihailo Ivanovic contract agreement would be a big coup for Millwall
Ivanovic had a fantastic start to life at Millwall last season, so it’s no surprise that he’s attracting interest from other clubs this summer, but his £15 million price appears to have been a stumbling barrier for his potential buyers.
The Lions have benefited from the signings of Japhet Tanganga and Romain Esse this season, but if they are to grow and accomplish their objective of promotion to the Premier League, they will need to maintain their top players, thus the club should be commended for adopting a tough stance on Ivanovic.
With top-flight clubs in England and Italy reportedly after him in the summer, Millwall would be making a significant show of intent by tying Ivanovic down to a new contract, and they will be hoping he can reach the same heights as last season if he returns to fitness.
