‘Feels great to be back’ – Sunderland man delivers huge injury update to Régis Le Bris after long absence.
Sunderland defender returns at last and discusses setbacks, recovery, and his drive for health.
Dennis Cirkin has expressed relief and delight at finally returning to competitive play for Sunderland’s Under-21s.
The defender has already appeared twice at academy level, first in a comeback win over Ipswich Town and then in an overwhelming 7-1 victory over Athletic Club in the Premier League International Cup at the Stadium of Light.
Cirkin confessed it had been a long time coming following a painful period on the sidelines. “It just feels great to be back out there again,” Cirkin remarked.
“It’s been a long few months and quite a frustrating period with a couple of setbacks along the way, so to finally get back on the pitch and play proper minutes feels like a big step forward.”

The left-back’s recovery has been interrupted multiple times, but he commended Sunderland’s medical and coaching team for guiding him through the process.
“I’ve been back training with the fellas for a little while now, and it’s been great, but nothing beats playing a game.
The medical personnel and colleagues have been excellent with me, carefully managing my rehabilitation and bringing me to this stage,” he explained.
Cirkin said the objective is to gradually raise his workload and develop the sharpness required to contend for a first-team spot again.
“The objective now is to continue improving fitness and sharpness. I feel terrific, and I expect to keep improving over the next few weeks.”
The 23-year-old also stated that Sunderland’s strong start to the Premier League season under Régis Le Bris has served as a significant source of encouragement during his layoff. “It’s a really pleasant place to return to.
The guys have been flying, and training has been top-notch, so all I want to do now is create momentum and be ready to support the team when needed.
Cirkin is anticipated to continue playing for the Under-21s as he approaches a full senior return.
What other Sunderland-related news is there?
According to reports in Turkey, Sunderland left-back Arthur Masuaku may contemplate quitting the club in January, only months after signing a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
The 32-year-old has struggled for minutes under Régis Le Bris, appearing only three times in the Premier League since joining from Beşiktaş in August.
According to sources in his hometown, Masuaku has informed his representatives that he is willing to return to Beşiktaş if the Turkish club makes an offer.
The defender is understood to be in constant communication with former teammates and is dissatisfied with his lack of involvement so far on Wearside.
Masuaku spent two years in Istanbul and had previously made over 75 appearances for West Ham United.
