Firefighters tackle blaze at town church

Firefighters tackle blaze at town church.

Firefighters are fighting a fire at a Victorian church in the town core. Crews were dispatched to St John’s Church in Harleston, Norfolk, this afternoon.

The fire service said six crews were responding to the incident on Broad Street, and a cordon was in place. It recommended anyone living nearby to keep their doors and windows locked.

The fire is under control but not yet out, according to a fire department official. “We still have multiple crews in attendance on scene, including one of our aerial ladder platforms to tackle it from above.”

Helen Orford, benefice administrator for seven churches, including Harleston, arrived at the site and said, “The fire has been extinguished, but there has been significant damage. “Nobody knows what happened or what triggered it.

“The church was more than simply a church; it housed a food bank and a variety of other community services. “Schools used it a lot – kids were supposed to come here for the harvest [festival] on Friday.”
