First homes at old Essex County Hospital given launch period.
The first residences of a 120-home development at a historic former hospital in Colchester are scheduled to open later this year.
The Gazette recently published new photographs of the old Essex County Hospital site on Lexden Road, showcasing how construction has advanced after nearly a year.
Contractor Kind and Co is working on the Essex Housing Development site, and the housing development’s drawings were initially approved in 2020.
Development began in April 2024.

Phase one of the project includes the construction of 63 new dwellings as well as the rehabilitation of the hospital facility.
It has been announced that the first phase, which includes the historic hospital building and two new structures, is set to begin this summer.
A representative for Essex County Council also provided an update, stating that “work on phase one at Lexden Gardens is progressing at a rapid pace, with a show flat set to open in the coming months to kick off sales.”
“Essex Housing is in the process of tendering for a contractor for the next phase of development, which will see 28 additional homes brought forward on site, while the current phase will see the delivery of 63 new homes.”
The dwellings will be a mix of one to three-bedroom apartments and three to four-bedroom townhouses.
Residents will have access to outdoor spaces such as balconies, patios, roof terraces, manicured courtyards, and a central green garden overlooking Lexden Road.
The Grade II-listed main hospital, nurses’ block, and kitchen are being renovated to honour the site’s history, which began in 1820 when the hospital initially opened.
Joseph Jefferson built The Essex and Colchester Hospital after persuading eight other persons to fund his idea of “hospitals for the poor”.

The second phase consists of new-build townhouses with tiny rear courtyards, the majority of which have roof gardens and access to shared parks and urban green spaces.
It also has apartments and two rebuilt houses. Phase three will feature restored flats.
Both the second and final phases are scheduled for 2027. The representative further explained:
