- As part of a pilot program, public buses will serve 400 in Marina Bay and 191 in one-north from the second half of 2026.
According to a Facebook post on March 25, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will carefully test the six buses to ensure that they meet all safety and operating criteria before they reach the road. When ready, the self-driving public buses would run alongside existing manned buses, it said.
The LTA gave a video sample of the 16-seat bus, stating that its features are similar to those of public buses. The video shows a wheelchair-accessible environment.
The bus also has cameras and sensors in the front, back, and top, providing operators with 360-degree visibility of their surroundings.
LTA stated in the video that additional preparation work is required before testing begins. The testing will include the LTA’s closed-circuit test, which includes basic manoeuvres and an evaluation of the buses’ ability to safely let passengers to board and disembark at all specified stops.
The driverless cars will be deployed on two public bus routes in a three-year experimental program.
Service 400 serves the Marina Bay and Shenton Way neighbourhoods, with stops at Marina Bay Cruise Centre, Gardens by the Bay, Shenton Way, and Downtown MRT stations.
Service 191 serves the one-north area. Aside from the Buona Vista bus terminal, it also stops at the One-North and Buona Vista MRT stations.
After the initial six devices are installed, the LTA can purchase 14 more and expand the pilot to other public bus services in Singapore.
The six buses and their technologies are built by software and application developer MKX Technologies, autonomous vehicle specialist Zhidao Network Technology (Beijing), and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD.
