Five talking points as Watford beat Queens Park Rangers.
Watford recorded their first win of the season, defeating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Vicarage Road.
The Hornets were impressive in the first half, and a quick-fire double from Luca Kjerrumgaard, who scored his first goals for the club, put them in command, only for a Kieran Morgan thunderbolt to give the visitors a foothold at the break.
That proved to be enough, as the hosts won their first three points of the season.
Here are five key takeaways from today’s game. As always, you can share your thoughts by using the comments section on this page.
Up and running
After a disappointing start to the season with back-to-back defeats, Watford will be relieved to have earned their first three points.
Paulo Pezzolano’s side dominated the first half and appeared to be on their way to a two-goal lead at halftime before conceding in stoppage time.
That goal, combined with Rangers’ improvement, altered the dynamic of the game, and the hosts were unable to regain control.
They defended well during their sticky spells, though, and finished the game strongly, only for Imran Louza to be sent off for a sliding challenge at the end. What did you think of Watford’s performance?
Baah off the bench
The decision to bench Kwadwo Baah ahead of the game was a hot topic as the Hornets try to manage his return to peak fitness after a lengthy injury layoff.
The danger man was introduced 10 minutes into the second half in place of Nestory Irankunda and was quickly involved, nearly scoring seven minutes before the end of normal time with a low strike that slid inches wide of the far post.
Was the decision to start Baah on the bench correct in your opinion?
Change of shape
Pezzolano also changed Watford’s formation to a 3-5-2, and the team looked better as a result, at least until they conceded.
The Hornets appeared at ease with their new approach, both individually and collectively; the side was well balanced, and they moved the ball well in the first half. How do you think the change in formation worked?
Unnecessary encouragement
Watford were 2-0 up and in complete control, and the frustration of the QPR fans was palpable, but the game changed in the first half injury time.
To be fair, Morgan’s strike was fantastic, but the Hornets had been a little sloppy before that, with Hector Kyprianou losing possession after carrying the ball out of defence moments earlier.
How did you believe the goal affected the game?
Off the mark
Kjerrumgaard showed some promising signs in his debut against Charlon last weekend, but strikers are ultimately judged on goals, and the Dane will be pleased to have opened his Hornets account.
The forward opened his body up nicely to finish off a simple but very effective move for the opener, and he wasted no time adding a second, deftly heading home a Louza cross at the far post. What was your opinion of Kjerrumgaard’s performance?
