Six and a half years had passed since that famous day, and Watford had not achieved a comparable comeback until Saturday, when they rallied from two goals down to defeat Derby County 3-2, giving Gracia his first away win of his second term at the club.

With credit to WFC Net’s Jon Sinclair, here are five previous occasions when Watford rallied from two goals down to win 3-2 away this century:

Wolves (FA Cup semi-final) – April 7, 2019

The most memorable comeback in Watford history did not occur in an away game, but it did take place away from Vicarage Road, thus it is included in this list.

Wolves appeared to be on their way to their first FA Cup final since 1960 with 11 minutes remaining after goals from Matt Doherty and Raul Jimenez. But Gerard Deulofeu had other ideas.

The Spaniard came off the bench to give Gracia’s team hope with one of the great Wembley goals, beating keeper John Ruddy with a stunning curling finish.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team appeared to be in control until Troy Deeney was fouled by Leander Dendoncker in injury time, and the skipper held his nerve to convert the resulting penalties, sending the semi-final to extra time.

The impetus had shifted to the Hornets, and the pivotal moment arrived in the 104th minute, when Deulofeu beat Ruddy with an angled finish.

Leeds United (A) – February 28, 2015

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side travelled to Elland Road in sixth place in the Championship but found themselves 2-0 down inside 20 minutes.

Deeney cut the lead in half six minutes before halftime, before Matej Vydra’s double – goals after 56 and 81 minutes – clinched the three points and took the visitors up to third place in the table.

Coventry City (A) – April 25, 2009

Watford’s final away game of the 2008/09 Championship season appeared set to end in misery when the Sky Blues took a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.

Within seven minutes, Brendan Rodgers’ side had levelled due to a quickfire double from Tommy Smith and Gregorz Rasiak, before Tamas Priskin sealed the comeback with a 78th-minute victory.

Colchester United (A) – December 4, 2007

Aidy Boothroyd’s Hornets had been at the top of the Championship for three months when they came to Essex, but they had lost their previous three games and were on the verge of a fourth consecutive defeat when the hosts took a 2-0 lead after 28 minutes.

Watford headed to Colchester a month after the two teams played at Vicarage Road, in which Marlon King also scored.

Watford were level at halftime with to goals from Marlon King and John-Joe O’Toole, with Priskin netting the winner in the 64th minute.

Bristol City (A – League Cup second round) – September 12, 2001

After defeating Plymouth Argyle in the first round, Luca Vialli’s side was awarded a trip to Bristol City.

When the Robins scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, it appeared that Watford would be eliminated, but a Marcus Gayle penalty in the 73rd minute gave them hope.

Ramon Vega then tied the game with three minutes left, but Micah Hyde’s last-minute winner sent the Hornets through.
