Flag row breaks out in Beccles as Union Jacks raised

Flag row breaks out in Beccles as Union Jacks raised.

A quarrel broke out at a bus stop after flaggers raised Union Jacks during a nocturnal operation.

Flagman UK and a crew of 18 volunteers known as “flaggers” have been hanging the country’s high streets with flags.

And this week, the leader, who is from Lowestoft and wishes to remain unknown, and his team came in Beccles following “thousands of requests” from residents.

A member of the public challenged three of the flaggers at the Old Market bus station, just outside the Bear and Bells pub.

On Thursday night, while the team was conducting a livestream on social media, a woman was heard telling them to take the flags down.

Susan Grey, the owner of the market booth Vintage Fleabag, is seen heading towards them in a video posted on Flagman UK’s Facebook page, calling the flag as ‘offensive’.

She then picked up the Flagman’s hat from the floor, and when she refused to return it, he remarked, “We are just going to send someone to your door, my love, for stealing.”

He then claimed she hit his hand before continuing to demand the headgear back. Vintage Fleabag stated on Facebook that the headgear was “thrown at me”.

She continued, “I was scared, and it made me weep. “Not much fun to be scared in your own home.”

Jonathan Gordon, who lives in the area, said he was attempting to figure out who to contact to get the flags taken down.

He remarked, “I believe it’s disgusting—not the flag itself, but the feelings behind it and the lack of consultation.

“They were quite threatening towards one of my neighbours.“Flagman UK stated, “I am not here to make enemies – I’ve put it up for fairness.”

Despite the fight, he stated that Beccles provided the “best reception we have ever had” and that they had received “thousands of requests” when their flags were removed from a bridge in Gillingham.

The gang stated that they would be in the Beccles region for ten days putting up flags.

Flags have sparked controversy throughout the region, with reports that they are dividing communities and intimidating certain people.
