Former Aberdeen midfielder Fraser Fyvie – Scottish Cup and FA Cup winner – forced to retire from football.
‘It’s time to stop playing and walk off the pitch, rather than being stretchered off,’ Fyvie stated.
Former Aberdeen midfielder Fraser Fyvie has been forced to retire from football, with the injury-plagued Scottish Cup and English FA Cup champion stating that he prefers to “walk off the pitch, rather than be stretchered off.”
The League One club, Cove Rangers, revealed the announcement. Fyvie has been back in his hometown since 2019.
The 32-year-old only returned to duty in January, following a knee injury in August.
Fyvie stated, “I’ve been thinking about it for the previous six months since I was injured again and hurt my right knee. “It was not a quick decision.
I took some time to think about it. “I’ve managed to bring myself back fit and on the pitch, but I believe it’s time to stop playing and walk off the pitch rather than being stretchered off.
“It’s one too many (injuries), and I’m thinking about my extended life, when I’m 80 or 90.” I’m looking to the future.
“My family and I had the conversation and came to a mutual agreement.”
Fraser Fyvie: From youngest-ever Don to FA and Scottish Cup successes
Fyvie, 32, was Aberdeen’s youngest-ever first-team player when he made his debut at the age of 16 in 2009.
Wigan Athletic’s then-manager, Roberto Martinez, paid about £500,000 to recruit Fyvie in 2012, and the Latics won the FA Cup in 2013.
Fyvie then won the Scottish equivalent three years later, when his next permanent club Hibs defeated Rangers 3-2 in the final at Hampden.
Fyvie, who formerly played for Dundee United, returned to the Granite City to join Cove in 2019 and helped the club win League Two in his first season.
However, Fyvie’s career has been plagued by injuries; he sustained cruciate ligament damage as a teenager with Aberdeen and has had many knee and ankle surgery over the years.
A Cove Rangers statement read: “The club can confirm that Fraser Fyvie has made the tough decision to retire from professional football.
“Fraser has decided to leave the game after considerable contemplation due to chronic concerns with several injuries.
“Despite his eagerness to continue playing, the cumulative impact of these injuries has made recuperation after matches more difficult.
“Fraser did not make this decision lightly; he considered all options before determining that the time had come to prioritise his long-term health and welfare.
“Everyone at the club would like to thank Fraser for his excellent effort, devotion, and professionalism.
