Frank Lampard insists he has complete “faith” in Haji Wright to hit his best form for Coventry City this season, but it is up to the striker to deliver.
The head coach was without the USA international for four months last season due to a serious ankle injury, but the club record signing still scored 12 goals to finish first, adding to his impressive haul of 19 in his first season at the CBS Arena.
And, with a new season and a fully fit Wright, Lampard is expecting a big impact from the player, who, he revealed, will likely play in a slightly different role this season.
“I’ve got a lot of faith in Haji, and, as you say, I haven’t had the best time to work with him because of his injury when I came in, and it’s obviously continued through the summer,” said the City manager, who welcomed the 27-year-old back from an Achilles injury in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with St Pauli.
“We hope that those things are no longer there, but the risk of injury is always present for any player.
But when I look at Haji, and I mentioned it to him last season, the position he played in and the way we play, I want us to play differently than he’s used to.

“So you may see Haji in a slightly different position this year with faith from me behind him, and confidence from me, and then the rest is up to him.”
Wright had previously been deployed wide left of an attacking three, but he also played down the middle on occasion. However, it appears that the forward will be leading the line more this time around.
When asked if that would be the case, Lampard replied: “We’ll see. With our current squad, there will be times when I need to make different decisions.
But with Haji, I believe the benefit is for him… and I obviously have a lot of conversations with him about getting the most out of him to play generally, especially at the top end of the pitch where they feel very comfortable.
And, more importantly, where you’re making the best use of their abilities, which is something we can work on.”
