Frank Onyeka on why he chose Coventry City, playing alongside Matt Grimes and showing his identity.
Coventry City news from CoventryLive: Newest Sky Blues acquisition Frank ‘The Tank’ Onyeka reveals why he selected the Sky Blues and how he’s settling in at Ryton.
Frank Onyeka believes he and Matt Grimes will compliment one other well in Coventry City’s midfield struggle.
The 28-year-old sees himself as a tough-tackling, box-to-box player who can drive forward with the ball, whilst Sky Blues captain Grimes is more accustomed to holding back and helping to protect the back line.
Onyeka, who was an unused substitute against Oxford United, hopes to make his debut against Middlesbrough on Monday night at the CBS Arena.
And, following the delivery of his second kid, a baby boy, on Sunday, the Brentford loan player is eager to get started with the Championship club. “Yeah, I hope to play,” he replied. “For me, I’m simply doing my best to train and hope to play on Monday.
“This is a major game. They won their last game and are currently at the top of the league, and we are doing everything we can to focus on the game since the winner will undoubtedly be at the top.
We’re concentrating on ourselves because we know it’ll be a really intense game. So we are doing everything and training hard to ensure we are prepared for the game.”
When asked how his move came about, when he first heard of Coventry’s interest, and why he chose the club over other interested parties, reported to be Sheffield United, Birmingham City, and Valencia, the Nigeria international replied:
“My agent told me about it early in January, but I was just focused on AFCON, so we didn’t talk much about it. And then, around two weeks before the transfer deadline, I had a call with Frank Lampard, which is when everything began.
“I chatted with him and could tell the club was moving in the right route; the club was on the rise, which was something I wanted. Also, I want to be close to my family, and there are many problems like this.
So that is why I chose Coventry above other clubs. When asked about his important qualities that he will provide to the club, he stated, “Strong, winning duels, tackling, and I can run forward with the ball.”
I offer experience to the team, as well as my identity and training style, and I always strive to increase the intensity of the workouts. And after reading the game, I believe they are the most important aspects.”
He described his experience practicing with fellow midfielders Matt Grimes, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles, and Jamie Allen as “good.” I believe we’re all various types of gamers. I believe that we each add unique qualities to the team.
For me, it’s simply a matter of finding a voice. In terms of playing with Grimes, who is usually one of the first names on the teamsheet, and whether they can complement each other, Onyeka stated, “Yes, I believe so. We are different types of gamers. We contribute different things to the team.
He has qualities, I have my own, and I believe we can complement each other.”
