Future of historical bandstand hangs in balance

Future of historical bandstand hangs in balance.

Councillors have postponed a decision on whether to remove elements of a Grade II-listed bandstand in East Sussex.

Work to rehabilitate and reopen the Eastbourne bandstand is likely to include the removal of structurally problematic materials such as columns, beams, and slabs.

However, numerous organisations have questioned whether Eastbourne Borough Council has gone far enough in exploring alternate ways to restore the framework, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Council officers stated that the planning committee should approve the plans, but the decision on Tuesday was postponed so that Historic England could visit the site and provide its feedback.

Hugh Parker, chairman of the planning committee, stated: “I believe it is critical that this particular scenario be thoroughly explored and that people have the opportunity to express their views in a coordinated and rational manner.
“I believe we cannot adequately discuss something with inadequate facts. I believe we need a final remark or series of comments from Historic England to provide their take on the entire situation,” he said.
“So this isn’t shutting down any kind of discussion, this is simply saying we can have the discussion on another day.”Historic England is set to visit the 90-year-old bandstand in the coming weeks, with the council indicating that it may “potentially” vote on the plans at a meeting in October.
