Gallery reopens with Pride, Dali and BLM exhibits.

The principal gallery at Brighton and Hove Museum and Art Gallery will reopen after an 18-month closure and a £2 million refurbishment.

The East Sussex gallery will close in 2024 to undergo roof renovations. The inaugural exhibition under the new roof, titled Passion, Power, and Protest, opens on Saturday.

It includes a painting by Salvador Dali as well as banners from Black Lives Matter marches and Brighton Pride, which explore how those issues fuel creativity.

One of five couches modelled on Mae West’s lips, created by Dali in 1973, will be on display.

According to Hedley Swain, the museum’s CEO, “Passion, Power & Protest explores some of the most pressing questions in society today, who holds power, what do we care about, and how can we create change?” Hazel Edwards, Arts Council England’s south east region director, added:

“Passion, Power & Protest is a powerful reopening exhibition that reflects the museum’s commitment to telling inclusive, challenging, and inspiring stories.”

The repair on the Grade II listed building was funded by Arts Council England, which donated about £1.5 million, as well as £500,000 from Brighton and Hove City Council.

It will increase the building’s ventilation, insulation, lighting, and energy efficiency.
