Gang member sentenced for East Sussex scams on elderly residents

A gang member was convicted for defrauding senior citizens in East Sussex.

“Mohammed Saddiqee, 25, of Woodlands Avenue in Wokingham, was the courier of an organised criminal gang in 2022, pretending to be Metropolitan Police officers to target vulnerable victims,” according to a statement from Sussex Police. On June 20, 2022, a Hove couple in their late 80s were called by the victim communicator (the person who contacts the victims) under the pretence of looking into counterfeit money in the area. Under the guise of supporting the inquiry, the victim communicator tricked the victims into taking out more than £6,200 in cash. Later that day, Saddiqee took the money from the victims at their home address and made an unsuccessful attempt to con them out of an additional £7,000. The same day, they reported the fraud.

“The next day, the victim communicator contacted a Brighton man in his late 80s peddling the same story – he was the fictional Detective Constable Robins, investigating bank fraud in the area.” The man was persuaded to take out and give him £4,200. On June 28, 2022, the victim communicator made another attack, posing as George Romeo, a police officer looking into bank fraud. “A couple in their 80s were his target, and Saddiquee took £6,800 from them to fund the fictitious probe.When Saddiqee was discovered driving on the A23 on June 28, police were already trying to track down his car from the first two occurrences. Three envelopes carrying £6,800 were discovered when the car was searched after he was pulled over. Following his arrest, he was accused of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud. Saddiqee was given a 12-month community order, 150 hours of unpaid labour, and a victim surcharge at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, October 24, 2025.”A deprivation order was used to seek additional reparations.” “Mohammed Saddiqee was part of an organised criminal gang that specifically targeted vulnerable people, lying to gain their trust to steal their money,” stated Detective Sergeant Ali Sturrock of Surrey & Sussex’s Economic Crime Unit.

Fortunately, the victims were wise enough to report their offences right away, which helped the police find Saddiqee before he could do more damage.
