German President to visit Coventry Cathedral this week to mark poignant anniversary.

The German President is scheduled to visit Coventry this week as part of an official visit to the United Kingdom.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender will pay a visit to Coventry Cathedral on Friday alongside the Duke of Kent.

They will place a wreath at the Cathedral ruins to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz. Germany bombed the city during World War II, killing around 500 people and destroying thousands of dwellings.

Mr Steinmeier and Ms Budenbender will tour the new cathedral, which was finished in 1962, and participate in a prayer session emphasising the ministry’s dedication to peace and reconciliation.

Mr. Steinmeier’s visit marks the first by a German leader in nearly 30 years. The Prince and Princess of Wales will greet them at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday morning, followed by a formal welcome to Windsor and a state supper.

On Thursday morning, the German president is due to quietly lay flowers at the late Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb before joining the King and Queen for a Big Help Out reception to demonstrate the impact volunteering can have in communities.

During his three-day tour, he will meet with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street and attend a conference of UK and German business leaders.

In July, the UK and Germany formed a new collaboration known as the Kensington Treaty, with Sir Keir promising the two countries will “work ever more closely” The deal includes removing restrictions on school exchange trips and passport e-gates, establishing a taskforce to investigate a direct train link between the UK and Germany, and committing to tighter collaboration in trade, security, and defence.

Mr Steinmeier, the federal president, will also address Parliament on Thursday, an opportunity Mr Trump did not have because the House of Commons was not in session at the time of his trip.

Coventry recently marked the 85th anniversary of the 1940 bombs. You can find all of the coverage for it here.
