Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash says: ‘Hartlepool will be the birthplace of Britain’s nuclear future’.
This is a game changer for Hartlepool. Since being elected as your MP, I’ve worked tirelessly with X-energy, Centrica, and government officials to bring the future of clean nuclear power to our community.
And this week, I’m proud to say that we’ve accomplished it. Centrica and X-Energy have secured an agreement with the government to build a new fleet of Advanced Modular Reactors, the next generation of nuclear electricity, in the UK.
And I ensured that Hartlepool was picked as the country’s first site. This means that our town will be the genesis of Britain’s nuclear future.
The first reactors will be built in our town, propelling Hartlepool to the forefront of the nation’s clean energy revolution.
It will inject billions of pounds directly into our local economy, creating thousands of high-quality jobs for local residents.
For decades, Hartlepool has fuelled Britain. Our nuclear power station has played an important role in that great story. While it is set to close in 2028, this new project ensures that we will not be left behind.
Instead, we will take on an even larger role. Hartlepool will not only continue to power, but also lead the country. Let us be clear: this is not a modest announcement.

A complete rollout might result in up to six gigawatts of clean energy nationally, enough to power 14 million homes and produce at least £40 billion in economic activity. But it all starts here in Hartlepool.
We are the launching point for this national fleet, and the rest of the country will take our lead.
And the benefits don’t stop with energy. This agreement includes apprenticeships for our youth, skill development programs to help them build professions at home, and contracts for local businesses along the supply chain.
Hartlepool firms will help shape Britain’s energy destiny, offering opportunities that will last for generations. I worked hard to ensure that our town was first in queue, because Hartlepool has the talent, the track record and the ambition to deliver.
Now we’ve got the investment to match.
Hartlepool isn’t just back on the map. We are setting the course for the whole country.
The future of Britain’s energy begins in Hartlepool.
