Hartlepool sport foundation intends to return historic seafront hotel to former glory

Hartlepool sport foundation intends to return historic seafront hotel to former glory.

Plans have been presented to Hartlepool council officials to restore a historic seaside property to its former splendour.

Last year, the Johnson Mcclurg Amateur Sport Foundation purchased the Staincliffe on Coronation Drive in Seaton Carew from developers to serve as a platform for its efforts to promote junior amateur sports development in the community.
It is currently undergoing restorations and has submitted a planning application to Hartlepool Borough Council for a change of use from hotel to charitable foundation base, complete with facilities for local groups.

The organization is also seeking authorisation from the local administration to rebuild and restore some of the building’s historic characteristics.
Meanwhile, it has already begun to make “good progress” on its work supporting young sport activities in the town, such as rugby coaching sessions in secondary schools and sailing lessons that will begin later this month.

Kathryn Port of the foundation stated, “We are currently working on repairing the roof of the chapel and other sections of the building.

“As soon as the council approve the application, we will be able to make further progress in returning the building to its former glory.”

She further stated: “Our sports foundation activities are making good progress and the rugby coach is working with local secondary schools delivering sessions in the schools and organising festival events.”Sailing instruction is also scheduled to begin this month, with activities taking place on the water, and all schools have been asked to register children for these sessions, which appear to be popular as an extracurricular activity.

“We are keeping the local residents and community up to date with the plans and progress and have received significant support for what we are trying to do, which is lovely.”

The Johnson Mcclurg Amateur Sport Foundation purchased the Staincliffe, which dates back to 1869, last summer after the building had been vacant for around 18 months.

It last functioned as a hotel until Christmas 2023. The former owners, Acland Homes, had planned to rebuild the site into residential apartments, but the plans fell through after an investor withdrew due to a change in circumstances.
