Hartlepool’s mosque receives share of £200,000 grant.
A mosque is one of 15 community organisations that have received funds to improve essential neighbourhood buildings.
The Salaam Centre (Hartlepool Jamia Masjid) has been awarded £200,000 as part of the Hartlepool Community Asset Capital Improvement Grant programme.
The funds will be used to modernise the center’s alarm and CCTV systems, as well as to replace its boiler.
The funding program, which began earlier this year, aims to renovate and update communal facilities to keep them safe and accessible.
Councillor Pamela Hargreaves, leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, stated: “Hartlepool’s community organisations have been holding our town together by sheer resolve, even when some of the buildings on which they rely have needed to be improved.
“They’ve stretched every pound, patched every leak, and kept their doors open when it hasn’t always been easy.”
The Salaam Centre’s manager, Nancy Pout, welcomed the funding.
She went on: “We are delighted to receive this funding to continue providing our services to the community, including our warm space during the winter months.”
Abrar Hussain, a mosque committee member, expressed gratitude to the council for their support.
He went on: “We appreciate this recognition of the great community work that happens in the building and this investment in a key asset in the town.”
The project, funded by the UK Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund, aims to improve community facilities on which inhabitants rely for social interaction, services, and support.
Other grantees include Six8Nine on Stockton Road, which has received cash to remodel two rooms as communal spaces.
Six8Nine’s community missions worker, Sue Hutchinson, expressed gratitude for the funds, which would be used to convert two critical rooms for various community purposes.
The scheme’s usefulness was recognised by Malcolm Walker, the Hartlepool Board’s independent chair.
Mr. Walker commented: “These organisations are at the heart of our neighbourhoods, and this investment gives them the support they need to keep doing what they do best – bringing people together, providing vital services and strengthening the fabric of our communities.”
