Hearts hero sends Tony Bloom a direct message as ex Everton star leaves Brighton after ‘incredible’ stint
Hearts hero sends Tony Bloom a direct message as ex Everton star leaves Brighton after ‘incredible’ stint.
The former Hearts, Everton, and Scotland player’s departure was officially revealed last week. A Hearts Scottish Cup champion has issued his verdict after quitting Tony Bloom’s Brighton, admitting the timing was right.
Last Monday, it was reported that David Weir had quit the Premier League team.
The former Jambo, who won the Scottish Cup with Hearts in 1998, joined Brighton as a pathway development manager in 2018 and was elevated to assistant technical director before taking over as manager three years ago after Dan Ashworth left.
Weir had a long playing career, spending over eight years with Everton after leaving Hearts, and he was one of the former players on the pitch when the Merseyside club waved farewell to Goodison Park last season.
He is also a Rangers Hall of Fame member and has been capped for Scotland on multiple occasions, having begun his career with Falkirk.
He has coached at Sheffield United, Brentford, and Rangers since retiring, and Weir is now seeking for his next adventure.
David Weir on leaving Brighton
He stated, “It is the right time for me to leave, but I will reflect on an incredible period with the club, and I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished, particularly introducing some special players to the Premier League and our European adventure.”
“Before taking on the post, I had an amazing mentor in Dan Ashworth, and I’ve had the honour of working with three exceptional men’s head coaches:
Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi, and Fabian Hurzeler. It has been a pleasure to work with our women’s first-team head coaches, most recently Dario Vidosic.
The club boasts a tremendous amount of skill on both the men’s and women’s teams, and the academy works tirelessly to create future talent that will benefit the club.
“I’d like to thank the coaches, players, and staff for their assistance and support throughout my time at Brighton & Hove Albion; they’ve all worked extremely hard to help the team improve.
I’ll always be thankful to Tony, Paul, and the board for giving me this opportunity at Brighton, and I wish everyone the best of luck in the future.”
What changes has Tony Bloom made at Brighton?
Bloom said last week of the former Hearts and Everton defender: “David has served our club admirably, but we now want to renew our technical area with new leadership and direction.
I’d like to thank David for everything he’s done for us and wish him well in the future.
CEO and deputy chairman Paul Barber stated, “I have truly enjoyed working with David over the last eight years and have valued his support and hard work over this period. I wish David the best of luck going forward.”
It coincides with a moment of transition behind the scenes at Brighton. Following Weir’s departure, Jaso Ayto, who formerly served as Arsenal’s assistant sporting director, has taken over as sporting director.
Mike Cave is promoted to technical director, having previously served as Brighton’s academy director.
