Mulligan’s persistence, drive, and energy in the heart of the park have been compared to compatriot John McGinn, and Hibs manager David Grey is full of praise for the midfielder.

Grey commented after his exceptional performance against the Bairns, in which he scored a lovely effort, “I don’t like singling anyone out.

“But, in terms of what I asked the players to do at the start of the game, which was to get on the front foot, I believe Josh Mulligan led by example. “I thought he was fantastic throughout the first half.

“His power, intensity, and ferocity on and off the ball. He earns an assist on his through-ball to the penalty area and then passes it to Kieron.

“He’s definitely playing at a very high level.” And his play has piqued the interest of Premier League clubs down south, ahead of a busy six months for Mulligan.

He will be anxious to secure a spot in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the World Cup after gaining his first call-up to the national team in October.

According to the Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have made “initial enquiries” about the bright young Scot.

According to the Mail, Forest’s interest is “stronger at this stage,” with Leeds United contacting Hibs about a potential deal to move him away from Easter Road.

Forest is awaiting proposals for England star Elliot Anderson, who is valued at £100 million. Leeds also hopes to improve alternatives in the centre of the park.

Mulligan has three goals in 24 appearances for Hibs this season since joining from Dundee in the summer.

Just last month, the two teams reached an agreement on compensation for the midfielder.

His contract at Easter Road runs until the summer of 2029.
