Historic castle closed for repairs to Great Hall

Historic castle closed for repairs to Great Hall.

Oakham Castle has been closed for more than three weeks as necessary maintenance and repairs are performed. The 12th-century castle in Rutland will be closed from Monday until October 16 for internal work on the Great Hall.

The castle, which dates back to 1180, was originally built as a manor house before being substantially fortified with walls, a moat, and drawbridge.

Rutland County Council stated that the works, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, would assist to safeguard the castle for future generations.

Grounds remain open

The repair will include replacing lime plaster and weatherproofing the walls in the Great Hall.

The castle has a collection of almost 200 commemorative horseshoes donated by kings and peers. Some of the horseshoes will be removed and rehung once the repair is finished.

It closed from September 2015 to May 2016 for a £2.1 million restoration project. The closure enabled the renovation of the Great Hall, upgrades to the castle’s heating and electrical systems, new pathways, and a new toilet facility.

During the planned construction, the grounds will remain open to visitors, but parking and public vehicle access will be restricted. Rutland County Council stated the cafe closed at the end of operations on Saturday and will reopen on September 30.

The shutdown is required for health and safety concerns, it stated.
