Hot, hot hot as Bedford & Dunstable fire crews host fun in the sun charity events.
Firefighters from across Bedfordshire received overwhelming support for their fundraising efforts during a weekend of charitable fun in the sun.
Bedford Fire Station welcomed the public with fun firefighting activities, fire engine tours, and the Vision Virtual Reality (VR) vehicle, which provided educational safety awareness.
Fire cadets demonstrated their creativity by transforming old cadet helmets into beautiful hanging baskets that they sold, with proceeds benefiting the Fire Fighters Charity.
These, combined with generous donations from visitors, totalled more than £950.
Green Watch from Dunstable Fire Station won first prize in the inaugural Dunstable Soapbox Derby for their ‘best performance’.

The team took the ‘wild and wonderful’ brief and ran with it, treating spectators to water bombing a firefighter dressed as fire, a cool down with backpack sprayers and water guns and finally a demonstration of their soapbox kart down the course. Green Watch was also collecting donations for the Fire Fighters Charity, which surpassed their £200 target.
Josh Matthews, Fire Fighters Charity Coordinator (Bedfordshire), stated: “Events like these show the public the fun, human side of our crews.” Yes, we’re here to respond to emergencies, but we’re also here to connect with our local communities.
“Organising open days and car washes at our stations, as well as participating in events like the Dunstable soapbox derby, are excellent ways to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity, which provides critical support to our crews and their loved ones.” “If you’d like to come along to an open day, there’s still lots planned over the summer – we’d love to see you there.”
