Hotly-anticipated HMS Sultan Gosport fireworks display cancelled due to “safety concerns” but event still on
Due to “safety concerns,” the eagerly awaited HMS Sultan Gosport fireworks show was cancelled, but the event went forward.
The traditional Bonfire and Fireworks Night has changed, it was announced this morning (October 30). Gosport’s doors will still open, offering a variety of events, but without its distinctive bang. “HMS Sultan has made the difficult decision to cancel the fireworks display at Thursday, October 30th’s Bonfire and Fireworks Night due to exceptionally high winds forecast for the evening, which would make the display unsafe for visitors and personnel,” an HMS Sultan representative stated.
“Our top priority is always the safety of our visitors, employees, and the local neighbourhood. After carefully evaluating the weather, we have determined that the high winds that are expected for Thursday night would be too dangerous to carry out the fireworks display. “We sincerely apologise for the disappointment the change in program will cause and thank everyone for their understanding,” they continued. We look forward to inviting the local community to this and other activities onboard HMS Sultan. The decision was taken solely for safety reasons.
The gates are still scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m. tonight, and there will still be funfair rides, games, and hot food available. All ticket holders will receive a 50% refund, with all revenues going to future events and the HMS Sultan Service charity. Funds will be returned to the original payment method within seven to ten business days. Mark Collins of Nation Radio will provide entertainment until 10.45 p.m., and the bonfire is still set to be ignited at 7 p.m. The 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day will still be commemorated with a unique commemoration. The event’s tickets are still available for purchase online.
