“I really like him” – QPR backed for not selling £15k-a-week “nuisance”

“I really like him” – QPR backed for not selling £15k-a-week “nuisance”.

This post is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features personal comments from FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more.

Michael Frey’s future at Loftus Road was guaranteed when Queens Park Rangers invoked a 12-month extension clause in his contract earlier this year, retaining the 31-year-old until the conclusion of the season.

According to Capology, the Swiss striker earns around £15,000 per week and has had several physical concerns that have limited his availability since coming from Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

With the R’s now enjoying tremendous depth in the striker position thanks to new arrivals Richard Kone and Rumarn Burrell, there are doubts regarding whether keeping an injury-prone player was the best decision.

Speaking on the matter, FLW’s QPR Fan Pundit, Louis Moir, backed the club’s choice to extend Michael Frey’s contract despite his injury history. “I do not believe it was a mistake to keep Frey at all.

Personally, I like him – I believe he’s a bit of a nuisance at this level; on his day, he’s difficult to defend against, and we’ve seen that several times since he joined the club,” he explained.

The Fan Pundit emphasised Frey’s qualities, which make him valuable to the team. “Obviously, signing Kone, Burrell – who looks a cracking player off the bench – I don’t really class Kolli as a striker, so if Frey gets back fit we’ve got another really important option there with him in the squad.”

Since coming in West London, the striker has made just 38 Championship games and scored nine goals. During the 24/25 season, Frey averaged 0.40 goals per 90 minutes.

Frey was sidelined for a lengthy amount of time in late 2024 due to a calf issue, and he sustained another training injury in March that kept him out of action. “With Celar leaving as well, I don’t think keeping him was a mistake at all.

Injury-wise, sure, it’s not ideal that he’s been out and missed a little of the end of pre-season, but you’d hope that over the international break, he’ll be able to get back and up to speed,” Moir added.

Moir discussed how Frey’s influence goes beyond merely goalscoring; his finest season personally was 21/22 with Antwerp, when he scored 24 goals in 39 league games. “He is a bit of a problem, but I enjoy him.

Look, he is a goal scorer, and he has been one throughout his career. With the signing of Kone, Frey will no longer be your primary man, but having him as an option is extremely important to us because it provides us with another method to play,” Moir told FLW.

The R’s fan underlined how the club’s increased attacking depth could benefit Frey.

“Purely because of the signings we’ve made attacking wise, and the players we’ve already got at the club in those positions, any striker up there is going to benefit from having Dembele, Saito, Chair, Poku, Vale, the likes of them supplying and creating chances,” he told reporters.

With Zan Celar leaving on loan to Fortuna Dusseldorf with the option to buy, Frey now has a clearer path to contribute and compete with Richard Kone and Rumarn Burrell, who have joined from Wycombe Wanderers and Burton Albion, respectively.

Kone, who had scored 88 goals in 109 appearances for Non-League club Athletic Newham, has two goals in his first three outings in the second division.

Burrell, a 24-year-old Jamaican international, has yet to score this season despite appearing in four league games, two of which were from the bench.

Moir was certain that the Swiss striker would contribute significantly once he returned to full fitness. “I still think Frey will have his part to play this season, he’ll come up with moments I’m sure.”

Given the better options up front from last season, any individual striker may face less pressure to produce.

Given the club’s winger quality, Rangers fans should be assured that Frey will be given plenty of opportunities when he returns from injury.
