‘I really like how Wigston is these days… I think it’s really lovely here’.

A few individuals commended the community, while some are hoping for changes.

Many individuals have negative things to say about their hometowns, but when Leicestershire Live went to Wigston to talk with locals about their hopes for 2026, many had positive things to say.

Pinar, who works at Mrs T’s Pantry on Leicester Road, praised the café’s community spirit and its customers. She said, “I really enjoy how it is [in Wigston] these days. We usually get older customers that are really kind. I believe it’s very wonderful here.”

Frances, another resident, felt similarly about the neighborhood’s safety and sense of togetherness.

She said, “Maybe the younger generation has a different perspective, but I truly enjoy it. I mean, many people claim it’s unsafe, but I’ve never felt threatened.

A staff worker inside the William Wygston, a JD Wetherspoon pub, said that she liked things as they are, saying: “I don’t feel there was anything I would change to be honest.”

Another homeowner believes that the main street has lost its charm, with fewer places to shop and too many similar businesses replacing shops.

Norma Wray believes Wigston needs a comprehensive overhaul to restore diversity and excitement.

Wigston currently has Peacocks, Poundland, B&M, Sainsbury’s, and Boots stores, among others.

Norma stated, “I feel like all the great shops have gone – all we have now are barbers, hairdressers, and charity shops, not to mention nailbars; it’s absurd. There are no places to go shopping.

“[For 2026], I think things need to be shaken up and made worthwhile again. We need some decent shops where we can buy a range of items so that we don’t have to always go down to Fosse Park.

It would be good to have a place to shop for clothes and shoes, as well as a nice fruit shop. “I think they should bring back the old-fashioned shops!”
