‘I think it’s worth the risk’ – Alex Neil on chasing late goals when behind following Millwall loss to Boro.
ALEX Neil stated that he will continue to take risks to chase goals late in games when Millwall is behind, even if it means conceding another.
In the season’s first game, the Lions defeated Norwich City 2-1 at Carrow Road, thanks to Macaulay Langstaff’s late substitution and 83rd-minute goal.
Millwall returned to The Den last Saturday, August 16, to face Middlesbrough.
They fell behind early in the second half when Hayden Hackney scored, but almost equalised four minutes later when Josh Coburn’s header hit both posts before bouncing clear.
Neil introduced several attackers in the second half, including Langstaff and Aidomo Emakhu, but his team was unable to recover, and Boro scored two late goals to seal the victory.
Neil still plans to take risks, regardless of how the final score looks. “If we score in the first half, it’s a different game because we’re normally very good at doing that,” Neil told me.
“We have a lead, so we can counter-attack and leave gaps for opponents. That is what we are good at. “Josh scores on the game’s back level. It is in the balance. We can go for it again.
“I’ll take responsibility for the last fifteen, twenty minutes, when things get a little messy, because we’re losing the game. “I’m not going to say, ‘Let’s try to keep the score to two.'” What I’m going to do is always try to achieve the next goal.
If it costs me a third, I understand that it looks worse and is not a good look, but it has earned us a lot of points since I’ve been here.
