The homewares business has now responded further.

Ikea Brighton’s spokesperson defended the new entrance policy, stating that their priority is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for customers and coworkers. They will take appropriate measures to maintain customer experience and safety as needed.

Ikea apologised for denying access to two young guys, which sparked the controversy.

Steven Paul revealed that his son had been to Ikea Brighton at the beginning of December.

The 18-year-old went to the store with another male buddy around lunchtime to buy materials to refurbish his room using money he had saved.

However, when they arrived at the business, they were surprised to learn that they were not permitted to enter.

Steven felt that his kid would be judged based on his identity, gender, and age because he is a young Asian man who is also high-functioning autism.

However, Ikea stated that the decision was part of a new initiative to discourage huge crowds. A spokeswoman for Ikea Brighton stated at the time, “We want all customers to feel welcome and safe.”

“Following a number of recent instances that have had an impact on the well-being of other customers and coworkers, we felt compelled to implement a preventive measure to avoid big gatherings.

“We remain committed to handling situations with fairness and sensitivity, and apologise that this approach was not applied as intended in this instance.”
