Incredible Edinburgh moment iconic military Chinook helicopter’s thunder over city.
On Monday evening, Edinburgh residents craned their heads up to catch a glimpse of military helicopters. On August 18, at around 6.45 p.m., a group of Chinooks was spotted flying across the city.
The choppers could be heard from a long distance as they flew over the city’s south side. The footage was taken from the Royal Observatory near Blackford Hill under mostly clear skies, making it ideal for those out and about to get a good look.
The Chinook has been operational with the RAF for over 40 years and can transport up to 55 troops or approximately 10 tonnes of cargo.
According to the RAF website, the Chinook is an extremely capable and highly versatile support helicopter that can be flown from land bases or ships into a wide range of environments, including the Arctic, desert, and jungle. “The aircraft may be armed and equipped with a suite of self-defence equipment, allowing it to operate across the battlefield. Chinook helicopters are primarily used for troop transport, resupply, and battlefield casualty evacuation (casevac).
It is unclear whether the teams were on a mission or conducting training exercises.
On Monday, we reported that two Apache helicopters were seen flying over the city. The footage, which was captured around 2.30pm on Monday, August 18, showed an American-made Boeing AH-64 Apache racing through the sky.
Flightradar24 showed that the aircraft had taken off from RAF Leeming, but the RAF helicopter’s destination was not specified on the website.
The British Army currently operates 50 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, the last of which were delivered at the beginning of this year.
