Inside Sheffield’s oldest pub dating back to 1475 with rumoured hidden tunnels and ghostly guests.
Watch as Stuart Crocker, the landlord of Sheffield’s oldest pub, discusses the history of the building and purported ghost sightings.
We went to Sheffield’s oldest bar to learn about the history of the grade II-listed structure and its supposed ghostly activities.
The Old Queens Head on Pond Hill, built in 1475, was once a hunting lodge for Sheffield Castle.
Some believe the structure has a connection to Mary Queen of Scots, who was famously imprisoned inside the castle from 1570 to 1584, although there is no definitive evidence.
The lodge was reincarnated as a public house in the nineteenth century, with the moniker Old Queens Head referring to the Elizabethan era.
The tavern preserves its original black-and-white timber construction, but small adjustments have been made to make it more pleasant for modern visitors.

Hidden tunnels and ghostly guests,
Stuart Crocker, Landlord of the Old Queens Head, stated, “There are stories that there are tunnels beneath the structure. If there are tunnels underground, we believe they lead to Sheffield Castle and possibly the cathedral. “There are ghosts in the tavern, which I’m sure everyone is aware of.
One of the best ones is that an old landlord before myself used to clean down every single night, basically we’d put the glasses away, make sure that everything was in place, and every morning there’d be a half a beer on the bar, and they’d do that every single morning, so one day I got curious about what this beer was, tried it, and it wasn’t one they even sold in the pub.
So they took one from the bar, put it to the side and the next morning it was gone. It has never happened since.
“We also have a ghost of a dog that, if it loves you, would sit on your feet and lap. There have been reports of apparitions.
A Civil War soldier stands near the fireplace. We’ve seen a small youngster and an older guy holding hands by the fireplace. “We’ve seen a woman dressed as an old maid.”
