United: Jaden Philogene hits hat-trick as Blades’ dismal start sinks to new low.

Report and free match highlights from Ipswich Town’s Sky Bet Championship encounter against Sheffield United at Portman Road on Friday night. Jaden Philogene scores a hat-trick, with additional goals from George Hirst and Jack Clarke, inflicting a crushing defeat on Ruben Selles’ struggling Blades.

Sheffield United remain pointless and at the bottom of the Championship table after losing 5-0 at Ipswich on Friday night.

For only the second time in an EFL season, the Blades have lost five games in a row. The previous time was in the second tier in 1995/96. Jaden Philogene scored a superb hat-trick, his first in senior football, and George Hirst and Jack Clarke added to the emphatic scoreline, giving Town their first league win of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to kick-off, Selles stated that he and his staff had “analysed what we were doing in absolutely everything” over the international break. And, in truth, there were few early indications that this was a squad at the bottom of the Championship table. But when it rains, it pours.

Ipswich issued a warning when Hirst, then Chuba Akpom, narrowly missed a trademark peach of a cross from Leif Davis, but they took the lead 10 minutes later when Philogene took advantage of Davis’ clever decoy run to find an extra yard and lash a shot into the bottom right corner.
The Blades finished the first half with five attempts, but none on target, as had been the case in their last two away defeats to Swansea and Middlesbrough.
Philogene added a cracking second within five minutes of the resumption after another driving run, and before Selles could make his scheduled quadruple change on the hour, Hirst took advantage of a comedy of mistakes at the back to shoot a third through Michael Cooper’s knees.
Philogene, a £20 million signing from Aston Villa in January, scored his trifecta with just over 20 minutes remaining, before Ben Godfrey set up Clarke to chest down a ball from the left and slot a fifth past Cooper.
Selles appeared shocked as the final whistle blew, and the pressure on him increased.

‘A damaging result for Selles – we might not see him in the Blades dugout again’

Lee Hendrie on Sky Sports Football:

“Looking at Ruben Selles after the game, I believe this may be trouble. “This could have tremendously boosted their season. We saw some symptoms of it in the first half, but they blew them away in the second.

“That is a really bad result for Sheffield United and Selles. “Sheffield United will have had a goal this season, which would have been to get promoted.

They wanted to go one step above what Chris Wilder accomplished last season. “It was a tough call for them to make [appointing Selles], but it didn’t happen. Sometimes you should be careful what you wish for.

“I understand they wanted to bring Ruben in and most likely change the style and feel of the football club.

We’ve seen that happen repeatedly at the club, where they’ve returned to Paul Heckingbottom and Chris Wilder, both of whom know the club thoroughly and out.

“Yes, I understand you want to try to modify the DNA and identity, but the consequences will be severe.

“I don’t like to see people getting sacked, but we might not see him in the dugout at Sheffield United again.”
