Ipswich Star readers mourn town’s lost airport after story.
Following the announcement of an anniversary celebration, Ipswich Star readers expressed their desire to see the town reopen its airport.
Readers rushed to our comment area to express their admiration for the defunct airport and their desire for it to reopen.
This follows our report that the Ipswich Airport Association will hold its annual event to commemorate the former Suffolk aviation base.

“It’s absurd that Ipswich doesn’t have an airport. They had a choice of about ten wartime airfields within 15 miles, as well as several Cold War airfields.
“What an absolute pity that this airport was closed; it might and could have been a magnificent regional hub. “The golden goose that should have been nurtured.”
Meanwhile, other commenters expressed their desire to see it reopen and argued that it should never have closed.

Despite a hard-fought effort by people, Ipswich Airport closed in 1996, and the area became known as the Ravenswood housing complex.
The airport opened in 1930, and it became home to several flying schools as well as a prominent parachute centre. Despite the shutdown, bulldozers only demolished the terminal building in 2005 to make room for a new housing development.
The Ipswich Airport Association will hold their annual airport commemoration event at the Ipswich Transport Museum on Saturday, September 20 from 1pm to 4pm. Although Ipswich no longer has an airport, it is nearby by alternatives such as London Stansted, London Southend, and Norwich Airport.
