Jimmy Dunne named QPR captain

Jimmy Dunne named QPR captain.

JIMMY Dunne has been named as QPR’s club captain for the 2025/26 Sky Bet Championship season.

The immensely popular defender – who joined Rangers from Burnley exactly four years ago today (Sunday) – signed a new contract last month.

Now, after 163 competitive appearances and 11 goals for the R’s, Dunne is thrilled to be able to add another memorable chapter to his W12 career.

“It’s a really, truly proud occasion,” Jimmy said. “My friends and family back home are very happy for me.

“I’m overjoyed that I’m still a QPR player, with my teammates, staff, and people I love. I still feel appreciated as I always have. The opportunity to lead the organisation is a source of great pride.

“Since joining the club, I’ve undergone significant personal development. I was obviously a youngster when I came here, and my experiences with the many head coaches have been quite beneficial.

“I definitely understand the game better now than I did at the beginning. I make less emotional decisions now than I did when I first arrived. But I’m still as excited to win.

“I want to continue to improve and it’s nice to have another head coach (Julien Stéphan) that wants to continue to help me with my development.” Dunne, who takes over as club captain from Steve Cook, added:

“Fortunately, I have Steve around, who handed me the armband and spoke a lot of wonderful things to the group about me. “He discussed how we might build our leadership styles together, as there are other experienced leaders in the group.

“I’m glad Steve is still around because I can learn a lot from him. He’s very experienced and has previously led by example, so I’ll try to follow in his footsteps.

“That experience goes a long way when you want to trust someone’s advise because it comes from someone who has been there and done it. It can go a long way.

“But even the players my age, Jake (Clarke-Salter), Ilias (Chair), and Fieldy (Sam Field), we’ve been through a lot together at the club: different head coaches, extremely terrible times, and some fantastic moments.

“I believe we will all have our own distinct leadership styles, and mine will be separate.

Hopefully, I can make everyone smile and laugh while also working hard and setting a good example on the pitch.” Rangers’ 25/26 league season begins against Preston at MATRADE Loftus Road in just under four weeks.

“All my family and friends will be there for that,” Jimmy joked. “And Preston at home, I’m sure there’ll be a full house on a nice day in London, which will be fantastic. Bring it on.

Let’s go. “Ultimately, we want to end the season better than we did. At QPR, I have always been quite ambitious. I have always wondered,

“Why not?” “My goal is to perform better than I did personally last season, score more goals, keep more clean sheets, and lead by example. But I believe that stability is key to the football club’s progress.”

Dunne reserved a final word for the QPR fans, saying: “They’re the reason I want to be here, because you can go your entire career and not feel truly respected by a crowd. “I was lucky enough to find that at QPR, and I didn’t want to waste it.

There’s no better place to be than when the Loft is bouncing, you’re scoring in front of it, and everyone’s on their feet singing.
