JONES: ‘TO SEE THE VALLEY ROCKING LIKE THAT WAS TRULY.
Nathan Jones was pleased to see his side start their Sky Bet Championship campaign with a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Watford at The Valley.
In front of the club’s largest home crowd in 17 years, summer signing Harvey Knibbs scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
“It was an emotional day all around for the football club,” Jones told reporters. “Not just the return and a packed Valley but obviously the three we remembered today and a fitting game – the effort, the honesty we played with and then to win it in the manor that we did and to see The Valley rocking like that was truly, truly outstanding.”
Jones was pleased to see his team begin the season with another clean sheet after keeping a club record 26 last year. He said, “We keep saying that if we do the basics correctly, we will always have a chance to win football games.
We believe we have always had a goal in mind. To be fair, we created enough today, and their custodian was probably Man of the Match.
They could have used a pen later on, but we should have had two.”I just thought they were technically a fantastic side. They are former Premier League players with athleticism, but I believe we matched them and showed no fear once we got to grips with it.
We went after the game and demonstrated some fantastic quality. I assumed we just needed something to fall into the box, but when it did, you probably didn’t want it to fall to anyone else on the pitch because that’s what we paid for, and that’s what he did.”
