JONES: ‘WE HAD ENOUGH CHANCES TO GET SOMETHING.
Charlton are eighth in the Championship heading into the November international break, having lost their five-game unbeaten streak to Wrexham.
Nathan Jones praised his team for their outstanding performance in a 1-0 loss over STōK Cae Ras.
“I’m proud, but also disappointed,” he told Charlton TV. “The group is giving me absolutely everything. Kayne [Ramsay] should not have played today, nor should Lloyd Jones or James Bree. But, given the dilemma in terms of defensive alternatives, they had to, and I’m quite happy of their work ethic and everything they provide me.
“They’ve been great, and it took them (Wrexham) a moment of lunacy to beat us today. We demonstrated our qualities.
We had enough of opportunities to win the game; it’s just that, first, we didn’t score, and second, it was a moment of lunacy that cost us.”
He was referring to a penalty conceded by Onel Hernández. Wrexham’s Josh Windass stepped up and converted the penalty kick to secure a crucial three points for the home team.
Speaking on the contentious incident, he stated, “There is no threat. James McClean crosses one in that is massive and beats everyone.
When Onel arrives, he simply places his head on it and manages to touch it with his hand, though I’m not sure whether he did.
But his hand is there, so the referee has a decision to make, which is the difference today. “We had to give them something, and we did, because I did not see them scoring. I didn’t see them break through our defence, but I’m only proud of the team.”
The Addicks now have two weeks off for the international break before Southampton visit The Valley on Saturday, November 22.”We need it [the international break],” Jones explained. “For the first time, we actually needed it. Bree was unable to take a set-piece today, despite being the best in the league at doing so, due to an injury.
Lloyd and Kayne should not have played because they were unwell and had high temperatures. They had to separate from the group and were unable to train yesterday due to the crisis in the defensive region where they played.
“We’re not at our peak, but I’m very pleased of the group, how they approach their work, and how they complete what I ask of them. They’re humble, hard-working, and I’m pleased of the team.”
