‘Landmark’ Aberdeen Union Street moment as city core road reopens. A stretch of Union Street reopened to motorists today, marking a “landmark” event in Aberdeen’s Union Street Central Streetscape project.

Traffic will transition to the new granite setts road surface on the east section of the project, between Correction Wynd and St Nicholas Street.

It will allow construction to commence on the present road surface on the north side of the street, which will be part of a larger and improved new pavement area.

Taxis, delivery trucks during designated times, and cyclists are presently permitted to use the new portion, which runs one way from west to east along Union Street Central. Emergency vehicles will always have access.

Pedestrians will continue to be able to access businesses and premises on the north side of Union Street during the latest construction.

The new road surface is built of local granite from the Avochie quarry in Aberdeenshire, which Tennants, an Elgin family firm, transforms into traditional setts.

The works are part of Aberdeen City Council’s £150 million City Centre and Beach Master Plan, and the council co-leaders celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Union Street Central development. Why this?
