LEE WILKIE: Dundee players made one key change – and it proved crucial.

The Dark Blues defeated St Mirren 3-1 at Dens Park thanks to a significant change in mentality.

One factor made the difference for Dundee versus St Mirren on Saturday: attitude.

It wasn’t Steven Pressley’s dream or anything particularly tactical that helped the Dark Blues win 3-1 and move them up the standings. Instead, it was the intention of the players on the park.

Too frequently, they’ve been passive and uninspiring, allowing the opposition to move the ball and being comfortable with their shape.

Their response after going behind to a gift of a goal spoke volumes.

No overthinking

Yan Dhanda takes a pop, and they have a little luck. If he does not go for the goal and instead takes an easy pass wide, he will miss the opportunity.

Similarly, for the second goal, Drey Wright cuts in and goes straight for it. It had a different mentality than Dundee.

They were simply going for it. There is no need to overthink things and you can play with some flexibility.Later in the game, Imari Samuels summarises the new thinking.

I’ve wanted to see Dundee press high and try to win the ball. Samuels’ sheer effort wins the tackle and puts Dundee up for Joe Westley’s score.

They were much more aggressive and received their reward. More of that is required.
