Leisure centre refurbishment work begins

Leisure centre refurbishment work begins.

Work to restore two Sheffield recreational centres has begun. The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) will receive a £500,000 expansion.

Work began on Monday, August 25, and both of the gyms will be refurbished. Concord Sports Centre’s £250,000 redevelopment, which will involve the installation of new cardio and weight equipment, will begin on September 15.

Everyone Active, the leisure operator that administers the centres in collaboration with Sheffield City Council, will fund the project.

The EISS, a multi-sports complex in Attercliffe, has served as a training ground for numerous Team GB athletes and boxers.

The first gym on the ground floor will receive brand-new equipment such as treadmills, cross-trainers, chest press and shoulder press machines, as well as a special recovery area with yoga mats.

The facility’s second gym room, a strength and conditioning space, will close on September 1 for upgrades, which are projected to last 10 days.

A brand-new line of equipment will be added to enhance strength training options and sports performance.

Concord Sports Centre is located at Concord Park, Shiregreen. The latest gym additions follow recent improvements to the health suite amenities, which included new steam rooms and saunas.

The rest of the facilities at both centres will remain open during the construction and unaffected by the gym closures, with group exercise classes continuing and the pool at Concord Sports Centre being open for use.

Everyone Active renovated the gym facility at Heeley Pool and Gym for £110,000 in June, prompting the investment in both centres.

The contract manager for Everyone Active, Phil Bowers, commented: “We’re thrilled to be announcing two major refurbishment projects that will greatly improve two of our facilities and serve a diverse group of people – from professional athletes to residents taking their first steps into movement and better wellbeing.”

Councillor Kurtis Crossthorn, chair of Sheffield City Council’s communities, parks, and leisure committee, stated, “This investment represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving health and wellbeing across Sheffield.”

The renovations at EISS and Concord Sports Centre will give citizens modern, inclusive places to keep active, rehabilitate, and engage with their community.”
