List of changes coming to Northern train services in Sheffield ahead of Christmas.
One of Yorkshire’s largest train companies has announced a number of adjustments to their services ahead of Christmas.
Northern has asked customers to double-check their routes before departing, as they announce a number of modifications to its services this winter.
The amended timetable is part of a national timetable change that takes place every May and December, during which rail operators review their route timings.
In addition to regular timetable modifications, which are intended to enhance the number of journeys and improve travel for customers, temporary alterations and delays are expected as engineering work is completed.
Sheffield’s timetable changes, which take effect on December 14, will result in new links to adjacent cities such as York, Leeds, and Doncaster. Permanent alterations include:
A revolutionary new fast train service will begin on December 27 and run all week. Extra trains will run on this route on December 20 and 21 to accommodate Christmas shoppers.
This is estimated to bring over 30,000 new seats every week, easing demand for both local stopping and long-distance trains.
A new late-evening train will run, giving customers more options for evening travel.
Sunday trains are being resumed, with two trains per way. Sunday trains were rescheduled to enable better onwards connections along the route.
Sheffield – Doncaster An additional evening peak train has been introduced to serve heavy commuting hours.
Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, services will terminate earlier, and there will be no journeys on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
Then, from February 2 to 6, engineering work will take place in Sheffield, disrupting a number of routes. Trains from York / Leeds / Doncaster / Adwick to Sheffield / Lincoln will not run.
Rail replacement buses will travel between York and Moorthorpe; Meadowhall/Rotherham Central and Sheffield; and Sheffield and Lincoln.
Matt Rice, Northern’s chief operating officer, stated:
“The upcoming timetable changes reflect our focus on improving connectivity, strengthening reliability, and offering more convenient services across the North of England.”
We are glad to offer later trains in the evening after customer input on some of our routes, as well as extra trains during peak times.
I’d advise clients to double-check their routes in advance, as there will be some big alterations in place, particularly during the December engineering period.”
