Location of planned £2.6million state-of-the-art cricket dome for Luton revealed.
Lewsey Park will be the site of Luton’s £2.6 million state-of-the-art indoor cricket facility. The government released plans for the town’s cricket dome in August, which is planned to open in the summer of 2026 and aims to increase participation among women and girls in the sport.
The dome will be the country’s largest facility of its kind, with world-class indoor practice facilities for cricket, allowing local players, schools and grassroots clubs to participate all year. The versatile venue will also be able to hold other sports such as hockey, tennis, and badminton, allowing as many locals as possible to get active.
Cllr Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Council, stated, “This investment is a game changer for cricket Luton because it will keep the nation’s summer sport alive over the winter months.
The new dome will assist to remove obstacles to participation by allowing young people, women and girls, and local schools to use high-quality sports facilities. Cricket and other sports will now be accessible to a larger portion of our community.”
It is part of a statewide initiative to increase access to cricket, made possible by a series of grants and capital funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Sport England, and the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport.
Richard Gould, ECB chief executive, said: “At the ECB we are focused on breaking down barriers and making cricket the most inclusive team sport, and state-of-the-art all-weather cricket domes like this facility in Luton will be truly transformative.”
“We know from the already operational dome in Bradford that facilities like these bring people together, create opportunities, and inspire the next generation.”
We are thrilled to have secured government backing to provide such opportunities to the people of Luton, and we look forward to future collaboration.”
Cricket East’s Chief Executive, Richard Darwin, stated, “We are delighted to have confirmation that this world-class facility will be delivered for local residents in 2026. Luton loves cricket, and this facility is critically needed to meet demand for the sport.
I’d want to pay respect to our collaborators, both locally and nationally, for their devotion to the project.” Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Executive Director for Place at Sport England, added:
“The construction of this new indoor dome is fantastic news for both cricket and the people of Luton.” Our investment in Luton extends far beyond the £1 million we spent to develop this building.
We are devoted to the area, partnering and collaborating with trusted organisations and the local community to provide chances for individuals to be active, allowing the people of Luton to enjoy healthier lives for longer.”
