Looking back at the original Ascot Road in West Watford.

It is common for a road to be named, but it is unusual for two adjacent roads to share the same name.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share images from Watford Museum’s archive, and this week we look back at this view of the original Ascot Road.

Christine Orchard, the museum’s volunteer archivist, stated: “Today, there are two parallel routes in West Watford named Ascot Road.

“Both lead from the roundabout at the bottom of Whippendell Road and head towards the business parks beyond. “The dual carriageway section is the newer of the two routes, built in the late 1990s.

“It was laid out in 1913 and over the decades Sun Engraving, whose buildings can be seen in this photo, expanded their premises along here and the Post Office set up a large sorting office.”
