Luton Town Centre Task Force praised for efforts tackling anti social behaviour in Home Office visit

Luton Town Centre Task Force praised for efforts tackling anti social behaviour in Home Office visit.

Officials from the Home Office paid a visit to Luton to celebrate the success of the Safer Streets Summer campaign.

They were in Luton to receive an update on the campaign’s good impact in combating antisocial behaviour (ASB) and increasing safety in the town and around the county.

In July and August, the team reported over 300 ASB instances handled with, over 300 fines issued, and over 330 good interactions with the public and local businesses. On one day of operation, the squad arrested five people for robbery, drug possession, and weapon possession in the town centre.

The visit to Luton Police Station brought together local leaders, police, and council representatives to discuss Luton’s town centre safety strategy and collaboration initiatives.

Officials were also briefed on increased walkabout patrols and visible town centre policing.

The Safer Streets Summer effort is a national Home Office initiative that aims to make town centres safer and more pleasant for inhabitants, visitors, and businesses. It increases patrols, funds local projects, and promotes practical solutions to combat ASB.

In Luton, this has resulted in more focused police patrols, engagement days with local residents and businesses, and collaborative problem-solving with council and community members. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire, John Tizard, stated:

“My team enjoyed the opportunity to provide Home Office authorities with an update on the work being done in Luton.

“The Home Office’s visit demonstrated strong support for the work being done in Luton.” Safer Streets Summer is about listening to communities, confronting anti-social conduct, and instilling confidence that our town centre is a safe and thriving environment.

Working jointly with Bedfordshire Police, Luton Council, and the Home Office, we are making a visible difference.” Inspector Vick Sanghera of Bedfordshire Police’s Luton Town Centre Policing Team added:

“The Safer Streets Summer initiative in Luton has resulted in increased street patrols, increased community visibility, and stronger connections with residents and businesses, but this is work that we intend to continue year-round.

“It’s encouraging to discuss this with officials from the Home Office so they can see our collaboration work first-hand.” It’s exciting to welcome the Home Office to experience our collaborative efforts firsthand.

We are still dedicated to working with the PCC and local partners such as Luton Council, businesses, and voluntary sector organisations to maintain this momentum and improve safety in the town centre.”

Our communities are our key partners in helping us to keep Luton safe and we would always encourage people to report any concerns via our website, follow us on Facebook and join  to keep in touch with us and learn more about what we are doing.”

Luton Council’s Leader, Councillor Hazel Simmons, expressed pride in the collaborative efforts with the PCC, Bedfordshire Police, and local businesses during the visit by Home Office officials.

The success of Luton’s Safer Streets Summer project demonstrates what we can do when we work together and reinforces our continuous commitment to a safe, friendly, and flourishing town centre. We remain dedicated to making Luton town centre a secure place all year round.”
