Man arrested over violent disorder at barracks

Man arrested over violent disorder at barracks.

Sussex Police have arrested a man after receiving allegations of a small number of individuals blocking the entrance to a training camp.

Sussex Police attended to the incident at Crowborough Training Camp on Wednesday.

Ch Supt Nick Dias stated, “A 44-year-old male from Heathfield was detained on suspicion of violent disorder and is currently in prison.

“Investigations are continuing into several reported assaults and threats of violence during the incident.”

In recent weeks, plans by the Home Office to temporarily lodge 540 male asylum seekers at the military facility have generated local protests and been the subject of public and political discussions.

Ch Supt Dias stated that he was aware that the proposed usage of the training camp has “caused concern within the community”. “We recognise the public’s right to peacefully protest and express their views,” stated the minister.

“The majority of those who took part in recent demonstrations acted lawfully and respectfully.” However, if a small percentage engages in criminal activity, we will take necessary measures.” He noted that enquiries were ongoing.

Police issued a dispersal order, which gives authorities temporary authority to compel individuals to leave an area, for the roads surrounding the barracks.

The injunction will expire at 21:15 GMT on Wednesday. “We will take strong action against anyone involved in criminal and anti-social behaviour,” a police official stated.
