Matchday Memories: Milne’s Men Beat QPR on Wally’s Debut on This Day in 1976!
In front of 16,184 spectators on November 9, 1976, the Sky Blues—managed for the previous four seasons by Gordon Milne, a current member of the CCFPA—entertained Queen’s Park Rangers in a Division One match at Highfield Road, winning by two clear goals.
The late Dave Sexton, who succeeded Gordon as manager of Sky Blue in 1982, oversaw Q.P.R. With the exception of a twenty-minute period in the second half, when the Rangers’ cunning and powerful forward Stan Bowles galvanised the away team to attempt a valiant comeback, the Sky Blues dominated this fascinating match. Barry Powell, a CCFPA member, gave the Sky Blues a well-earned lead in the sixteenth minute, capping a fantastic play that started with Jim Blyth, our goaltender and fellow CCFPA member.
At halftime, the Sky Blues were ahead by a goal. This continued until three minutes from time, our Irish forward Donal Murphy scored to end the Q.P.R. comeback and double City’s lead. Ian Wallace, a young Scot making his debut for the Sky Blues and now a member of the CCFPA, set up Donal’s game-winning goal. Wallace was given a standing ovation as the teams departed the field, with the Sky Blues finishing eleventh after the 2-0 victory.
