Michael Stewart urges Hibs to make move for Sunderland player as ‘bonus’ could provide engine room help
Michael Stewart urges Hibs to make move for Sunderland player as ‘bonus’ could provide engine room help.
According to the pundit, it could be a good move for Hibernian. After witnessing Partizan Belgrade’s victory, Michael Stewart believes Hibs would make a wise move to sign Sunderland enforcer Nectar Triantis.
They were taken to extra time after leading 2-0 in the first leg away from home against Partizan Belgrade in their UEFA Conference League third round qualifier, but David Gray’s side advanced 4-3 on aggregate despite their 3-2 loss on Thursday.
Kieron Bowie scored a spectacular goal before Chris Cadden settled things in the extra 30 minutes.
Former midfielder Stewart attended the game and identified the midfield as an area that could be improved, with Triantis missing one player from last season.
He has returned to Sunderland after shining in the Easter Road engine room en route to their third-place Premiership finish last season, and Stewart believes Hibs would benefit from the enforcer’s third stint in Leith, having previously been loaned twice.
Nectar Triantis to Hibs transfer suggestion
He stated during the Sportscene commentary, “I just feel this system at the moment, Hibs are slightly lacking in the middle of the park.” There’s a lot of work to be done by whoever is in there.
Josh Mulligan and Dylan Levitt are clearly present, as is Alasana Manneh. They have a lot of space to cover. “Even though they’re playing against ten men, it feels like they have too much space to shut down and close.
For Triantis to return to Easter Road, I believe he would be a huge asset for David Grey and his team if he could get him back into a Hibs jersey.”
Any midfield issues were irrelevant as Hibs moved on to their clash with Polish opponents. Head coach Grey stated, “It was an incredible night and a valuable experience for our younger players.” They have a bright future ahead of them, and it would not have been undeserved if we had qualified for the next round.
David Gray on Hibs vs Partizan Belgrade
“It was a very good game and an interesting match, but we did not qualify despite winning.” We were the superior team and were closer to scoring the third goal than Hibs were to scoring their first.
The atmosphere was incredible. Our European journey has been a grand, beautiful experience.
We’re a young squad, and I’m extremely proud of my entire team. “I really enjoyed the goals. I believe it is simply due to the emotion, the way the game played out, and everything else. It will be difficult to analyse, but ultimately, winning the tie on two legs is a fantastic result and performance.
“One thing I told the players was that I played extremely well in the away leg, and the magnitude of that result to go over there and win 2-0 in an atmosphere and environment like that where they had never been before.
We played it down knowing we were only halfway through the tie, but I’m overjoyed for the players and believe we fully deserve to be in the next round. Overall, a great night’s work.”
